Reviews from the female perspective on Rods, reels, bags, nets, flies etc...

Recently on the Little Blackhall and Inchmarlo beats of the Dee I planned to review the Bloke XL50 13ft 6” and the new Shakespeare Expedition 14ft salmon travel rod.

So here goes… the female perspective…

 Bloke's 13ft 6" XL50 Salmon Rod

The sleek and exceptional Bloke XL50 13ft 6” salmon rod is constructed from 50 million modulus carbon fibre and is a 8/9 weight masterpiece.  The rod is perfectly constructed with attention taken to every detail.  This 4 piece loads well and delivers at amazing speed. I found Long range spey casting as well as snake and overhead casts relatively easy and effortless with an 8 weight line. Single leg intermediate guides ensure less weight and reduced line friction.  The top piece of the XL50’s are constructed with a slightly different material giving a fast top section so "tip-bounce" is almost eliminated. Each rod features superior grade cork on both handles which are just the right size for when you need to change hands and titanium down locking vermillion hardwood reel seat.  The blank is finished in a burgundy colour with deep burgundy and gold whippings, alignment dots on all sections for a quick set up and is supplied in a matching cloth bag and optional leather case. Although this rod retails at £440 which might be out of any beginner’s budget the XL50 is a forgiving rod which can accommodate the novice, intermediate or professional angler and is a joy to fish with all day long.

Shakespeare's Expedition 14ft Travel Salmon Rod

The new Shakespeare Expedition 14ft salmon travel rod comes in 6 sections and has a line weight of 9/10.  These are manufactured using a 30 million Modulus carbon blank and gives a fast progressive action on most casts. The “Expedition” is finished using quality cork handles which are both long enough for several hands.  There are plenty snake intermediate guides and each section has over sliding joints.  A nice double locking screw system on the reel seat, it’s dark petrol blue/green colouring and black whippings complement this practical and attractive travel salmon rod which is supplied in a cloth bag and protective travel tube.  Retailing between £59.99 and £80 it will be hard to find a brand new 14ft salmon rod for less.  The Expedition is a recommended step from trout to salmon fishing and although a tad too heavy for me it won’t’ break the bank.
